Face paint markers, from patch test to wash-off

A calm routine for party day: test, draw, set, remove.

The short version

  • Patch-test on the inner wrist before a full design.
  • Outline, let it dry a few seconds, then fill.
  • UV neon ink glows under blacklight only.

The day before

Draw a short line on the inside of a wrist or elbow and leave it for a while. If the skin stays calm, you are set. Skip broken or irritated skin, and stay clear of eyes and lips on the day.

New pens sometimes arrive with a pale tip. Shake, uncap for a moment, and dab on paper until the color comes through.

Drawing order

Start with the outline in a mid-tone, wait a few seconds for it to set, then fill the large areas with the round tip. Details such as whiskers, dots and highlights go on last with the brush tip or a fine metallic.

For a queue of children, pick three designs in advance. A butterfly, a tiger and a star on the cheek cover most requests.

Making neon work

UV markers need a blacklight. Check the venue: LED blacklight bars and tubes in the 365 to 395 nm range work well, while ordinary lamps and nail-curing lamps do not. Thicker lines glow brighter than thin ones.

Getting it off

Dry ink resists sweat, which is the point, so removal takes a little rubbing. Wet wipes handle small designs. For a full face, massage in facial cleanser or soapy water, then rinse. Recap every pen until it clicks so the set is ready for next time.
